In short
A dental cleaning removes the plaque and hardened tartar that brushing cannot reach, examines the gums for inflammation, and screens the mouth while problems are still small. At Form + Function Dental Aesthetics in Las Vegas, cleanings follow a guided biofilm therapy protocol: the plaque is stained so it can be seen, then removed with an AirFlow style air polishing system that uses warm air, water and a fine powder instead of routine scraping, alongside a plaque staining system that identifies oral bacteria by age against a 24 hour threshold and by cavity producing risk. Every checkup also includes an oral cancer screening of the mouth, throat and neck, and a hygiene visit carries the same unhurried room and complimentary comfort menu as any cosmetic case.
A dental cleaning is the appointment where plaque and hardened tartar are removed from your teeth and along the gumline, your gums are examined for inflammation, and the state of your mouth is documented so changes can be tracked over time. It is preventive care rather than repair. Much of what a dentist eventually has to fix began as something a cleaning could have caught earlier.
What is guided biofilm therapy?
Guided biofilm therapy is a way of running a cleaning in a fixed order, and the order is the point. The plaque is disclosed with a stain first, so both of us can see exactly where the biofilm is instead of guessing at it. It is then removed with AirFlow, a stream of warm water and a fine powder delivered under air pressure, which lifts biofilm off enamel, off the gum line and out from between the teeth without the scraping most people brace for. Hand instruments and ultrasonics are kept for the hardened tartar that genuinely needs them, rather than being used across the whole mouth by default.
Two things follow from that. It is far more comfortable, which is why patients describe an AirFlow dental cleaning as pain free where they would not have described their last cleaning that way. And it is gentler on the tooth: a powder stream is kinder to enamel, to exposed root surfaces and to the margins of crowns, veneers and implants than a metal tip is.
Is an AirFlow cleaning right for everyone?
Nearly, but not quite. It suits sensitive teeth, receding gums, stained enamel, orthodontic patients and anyone with cosmetic work in the mouth, and it is the default here. Some conditions call for a different approach, and heavy tartar still needs conventional instrumentation to remove. If your mouth needs something other than a routine cleaning, you will be told that rather than sold a cleaning that cannot do the job. Gum disease is treated as gum disease, on its own page.
At Form + Function Dental Aesthetics in Las Vegas, dental cleanings are performed with an air polishing system rather than a metal instrument scraping across enamel. Warm air, water and a fine powder lift plaque and surface stain away with minimal scraping. That is why we call cleanings here pain free, and why patients who have avoided the hygiene chair for years are often willing to sit down again.
The visit is also unhurried. We see one patient at a time, start to finish, in the same quiet room and with the same complimentary comfort menu we give a veneer case. A hygiene appointment is not a lesser appointment.
What a Dental Cleaning Actually Does
Plaque is a soft film of bacteria that forms on teeth continuously. Brushing and flossing remove most of it. What is left hardens into tartar, which is no longer soft enough to brush away, and it holds bacteria against the gum tissue. Gums answer that with inflammation: redness, puffiness, bleeding when you floss. Removing the deposit lets the tissue settle and takes away the rough surface the next layer would have attached to.
A cleaning is also the appointment where things get noticed. Dr. Kevin includes an oral cancer screening with every checkup, examining the inside of the mouth, the throat and the neck for lumps or abnormalities. Worn edges, a cracked filling, a tooth that has started to move, gums that bleed in one spot only: these are the observations that keep small problems small.
Does a dental cleaning hurt?
Most patients tell us it does not, because we do not rely on scraping to remove buildup. The air polishing system works with warm air, water and a fine powder, which is gentler on the tooth surface and on sensitive gum tissue than a metal instrument passing over the same area. Hand instruments are still used where they are genuinely needed, but they are the exception rather than the routine. If past cleanings have gone badly, say so before we begin. Here is what every hygiene visit includes.
- Air polishing with warm air, water and fine powder, so buildup comes off with minimal scraping
- A plaque staining system that identifies oral bacteria by age against a 24 hour threshold and by cavity producing risk
- An oral cancer screening of the mouth, throat and neck at every checkup
- An examination of the gums for bleeding, recession and inflammation
- Low dose digital X-rays when they are due or when something needs to be seen clearly
- A digital intraoral scan with no impression material when records are needed
- Instruments sterilized to hospital grade standards, individually tracked and packaged
- The comfort menu at no charge: eye patches, Apple AirPods Max headphones, aromatherapy, Evian and San Pellegrino water, weighted blankets and Aesop amenities
How We Clean Teeth at Our Summerlin Studio
Before anything is removed, we stain the plaque that is there. The staining system separates bacteria that formed within the last 24 hours from bacteria that has been sitting longer, and it flags the deposits linked to cavity producing risk. You see the result on your own teeth. It shows where your brushing is landing and where it is consistently missing, which turns a generic reminder to floss into a conversation about two or three specific surfaces.
The cleaning itself is done with the air polishing handpiece. Warm water keeps the sensation comfortable, the powder is fine enough to work along the gumline, and the aim is to disturb as little healthy tooth structure as possible. Where a deposit is too hardened for air alone, Dr. Kevin uses an instrument deliberately and only in that area.
If your gums are bleeding and the reason is not obvious, we can run a comprehensive oral pathogen test on your saliva to identify the bacteria, fungus or virus present rather than guessing. That result can change the plan, and it is one reason a cleaning is sometimes scheduled on its own.
Can I have my teeth cleaned at my first appointment?
Sometimes yes, and sometimes it is better that you do not. About two hours are reserved for every new patient, and much of that goes to examination, imaging and understanding your mouth before anyone works in it. When testing, imaging or a prescription needs to come first, we schedule your cleaning as a separate appointment so the correct protocol is followed rather than rushed. A cleaning done before we know what we are treating is often a cleaning that has to be done again.
Is a dental cleaning the same as treatment for gum disease?
No. A routine dental cleaning maintains a mouth where the gum and bone support around the teeth is already healthy. Periodontal therapy is a different procedure for a different condition. Once inflammation has moved below the gumline and bone support has been affected, treatment goes deeper, is often divided across more than one visit, and is followed by a maintenance interval closer than a healthy mouth needs.
Dr. Kevin will tell you which of the two you need after examining your gums and reviewing your X-rays, and he will show you what he is looking at. If gum disease is part of your picture, our page on gum disease covers that treatment. Periodontal surgery is referred to a periodontist we trust here in Las Vegas, and we stay in the plan rather than hand you a phone number.
What does a dental cleaning cost, and will insurance cover it?
We do not publish a price for a cleaning, because the honest answer depends on what your examination shows, whether X-rays are due, and whether what you need is a routine cleaning or periodontal therapy. A figure quoted before that is a guess. What we can tell you is how the money is handled: you receive the full cost of any treatment in writing before treatment begins, and nothing starts until you have read it.
We accept most PPO dental insurance plans and are in network with a select few. Coverage for preventive visits varies from plan to plan, so we review your benefits and tell you what we find. Payment plans and third party financing are reviewed at the consultation. Two figures are fixed: a cosmetic consultation is $50, and an appointment canceled or rescheduled with less than 24 hours notice is subject to a $50 fee. The second is what keeps the unhurried schedule intact for the patient who would have taken your place.
Your first visit at our Summerlin studio starts with a conversation, not a handpiece. We take a history, image what needs imaging, and Dr. Kevin walks you through what he found, including whether your cleaning happens that day or at a visit of its own. We are at 4205 S. Grand Canyon Dr. #19, next to Target at the Grand Canyon Shoppes, open Monday through Thursday, 8:00am to 5:00pm. We are at 4205 S. Grand Canyon Dr.
