What Gum Disease Is, and How Gingivitis Differs From Periodontitis

Gingivitis is inflammation of the gum tissue only. Plaque collects along the margin where tooth meets gum, the body responds, and the tissue turns red, puffy and quick to bleed. No bone has been lost yet, which is why gingivitis can be reversed: remove the deposits thoroughly, keep up with them at home, and the tissue can return to health.

Periodontitis is what happens when that inflammation continues below the gum line. The attachment between tooth and gum breaks down, a pocket forms, bacteria colonize a space a toothbrush cannot reach, and the bone anchoring the tooth is gradually lost. Bone does not grow back on its own, which is why periodontitis is managed rather than cured. Dr. Kevin will show you the measurements and the images and tell you plainly where you stand.

Why Do My Gums Bleed When I Brush?

Bleeding gums are inflammation, and healthy gum tissue does not bleed when you brush it. Bleeding is common enough that many people assume it is normal, or that they are brushing too hard. It is neither. Inflammation is the body responding to something, usually a bacterial population living where it should not be, and that is a sign worth investigating rather than brushing around.

Periodontitis is often painless until it is advanced, so the absence of pain proves nothing. Some patients have none of these signs and still show bone loss on an X-ray.

How Gum Disease Treatment Is Done at Form + Function

We start by finding out what is actually there. A comprehensive oral pathogen and salivary test identifies the specific bacteria, fungus or virus present in your mouth, so care is aimed at what you have rather than at gum disease in the abstract. A plaque staining system shows where deposits sit and identifies bacteria by age against a 24 hour threshold. Low dose digital X-rays show the bone level, and our large view CBCT gives a full 3D image from head to neck when a case calls for it.

Deep cleaning, known clinically as scaling and root planing, is the core of non surgical periodontal therapy. It removes plaque and hardened tartar from the root surfaces below the gum line and smooths the root so the tissue has the best chance of reattaching closely. Our air polishing system uses warm air, water and a fine powder to lift deposits and surface stain with minimal scraping. A dental laser is available as an adjunct where Dr. Kevin judges it useful, and every instrument is sterilized to hospital grade and individually tracked.

Do I Need Gum Surgery, and Can Gum Disease Be Cured?

Most gum disease is treated without surgery. Gingivitis caught before the bone is involved can resolve completely. Periodontitis can be halted and held stable for years, but bone already lost does not return, so the honest word stays managed rather than cured, and how well it holds depends on your tissue, your home care and your maintenance intervals. If deep pockets do not respond to thorough non surgical therapy, or if a case needs grafting or surgical pocket reduction, that is periodontal surgery and we refer it to a specialist we trust. Referring out when someone else is the right hands is part of doing this properly.

How Often Will I Come In After Treatment?

After the deep cleaning, the interval between visits is set by your tissue rather than the calendar. Many patients treated for periodontitis do best on periodontal maintenance every three or four months, because bacteria repopulate a treated pocket faster than a six month schedule accounts for. At each visit we measure the pockets again, compare them to the previous numbers and clean above and below the gum line. If the tissue holds, intervals can lengthen.

Gum Inflammation and the Rest of Your Health

Research has documented associations between periodontal inflammation and systemic conditions including cardiovascular disease and diabetes. An association is not a cause: the evidence links these things, it does not establish that treating your gums changes the course of another disease. What Does Gum Disease Treatment Cost, and Does Insurance Cover It?

The cost of periodontal disease treatment depends on how much of the mouth is involved, how deep the pockets are, how many appointments the deep cleaning takes and which diagnostics are used, so no honest number exists before someone has looked in your mouth. You receive the full cost in writing before treatment begins, with nothing added later. We accept most PPO dental insurance plans and are in network with a select few. Coverage percentages, frequency limits and annual maximums vary by plan, so we verify your benefits rather than guess. Payment plans and third party financing are reviewed at your consultation.

Your first visit runs about two hours. Dr. Kevin examines every tooth and every gum margin, measures pocket depth and records the numbers as a baseline, takes low dose digital X-rays, screens for oral cancer and runs salivary testing where it is warranted.
